"Intersectionality: Transcending Binaries"

The interactive workshop on the topic of intersectionality kicked off with captivating and inspiring talks by the renowned guest speakers Prof. Sally Chivers, Trent University (Canada), Prof. Maureen Daly Goggin, Arizona State University (USA), Univ.-Ass. Dr. Susanne Hamscha, University of Graz and Univ.-Ass. Simon Daniel Whybrew, BA MA, University of Graz. The four talks provided the over 60 participants with an insight into research fields ranking from an intersectional approach to feminist, transgender, and body studies to aging studies and thereby familiarized the audience with the complex, interdisciplinary and intercultural topic of intersectionality.
This input session was followed by group discussions in which the participating students were able to actively rethink and thereby construct their own understanding of intersectionality. The aim of these group works was to bring forward a personal definition of this concept, which was later on presented in very creative ways by the participating students.
The workshop was a cooperation between the Department of American Studies, the Centre for Intermediality Studies and the Center for Inter-American Studies and was hosted by Univ.-Prof. Nassim W. Balestrini and Assoz. Prof. Ulla Kriebernegg from the University of Graz.
