Climate Migration Fiction
talk by Claudia Sadowski-Smith, Professor of English and American Studies at Arizona State University
Die Veranstaltung findet am RESOWI, SZ 15.22, Bauteil G, 2. Stock, Universitätsstraße 15, 8010 Graz statt.
This presentation discusses an emerging body of climate migration fiction (climigfi), which adds international mobility to the emphasis on global warming in a growing number of climate fictions (clifi). Climate migration fiction places climate research, which has paid insufficient attention to migration as a fundamental mechanism of social stratification, in conversation with a growing recognition in migration studies that global warming interacts with socioeconomic and political factors as drivers of human mobility. This body of fiction highlights the climate dimensions of contemporary US-Mexico, Australian, and Mediterranean migration, its (settler) colonial histories, and its impact on the ecology. As the fiction overlays portrayals of ecological dystopias with more hopeful, magical realist imaginaries of multispecies movement, it calls for combined struggles for migrant rights and environmental mitigation.
