Language and Plurality

The Language and Plurality cluster is in a transformation phase.

So far, the cluster has focused in particular on linguistic diversity from a sociolinguistic perspective, but has also subsumed cultural, political, legal and social aspects of diversity that manifest themselves in socio-multilingualism and individual plurilingualism. With the relaunch of the research network "Heterogeneity and Cohesion" in October 2019, we want to further expand the scope of the cluster and invite all those colleagues who deal with language and plurality in the broadest sense to use the cluster as an interdisciplinary networking platform. Apart from the (inter-)disciplinary perspectives already mentioned, we would like to address scholars from all disciplines who are concerned with the contribution of language to the diversity of society in the past and present, with literary and cinematic stagings of linguistic diversity, its potential for encounter and conflict, but also with social and scientific constructions of (one- vs.) multilingualism.

Interested parties are cordially invited to the event "Social Diversity and Social Cohesion" on 25 October 2019, which on the one hand celebrates the 10th anniversary of the research network 'Heterogeneity and Cohesion' at the University of Graz and on the other hand gives an outlook on the further development as a research network. Within the framework of table discussions, it will be possible to exchange ideas with the respective cluster spokespersons about future contents and tasks.

A first event of the cluster on the plurality of scientific language(s) is planned for December 2019. Further information will follow.
